The Shipwright's Spiling Batten and the Contours of the Unplanned Plank
The shipyards of the past were noisy, chaotic places, filled with the scent of salt, tar, and fresh-sawn timber. Within this controlled chaos, the shipwright was the master of an impossible geometry. He wasn't building a simple box; he was constructing a complex, curved hull designed to slip through the water with minimal resistance. The plans existed, of course, but the reality was in the wood itself—each massive, irreplaceable plank, cut from a uniquely shaped tree, had to be fitted perfectly to the ship’s growing frame. The challenge was immense: how do you transfer the exact, complex curve of the ship’s hull onto a flat, irregular piece of timber? The answer, and the key to the entire endeavor, was a simple, flexible tool called a spiling batten.
A spiling batten wasn’t a precision instrument in the way we think of a micrometer or a laser level. It was often just a thin, pliable strip of wood, perhaps a leftover from a previous cut. Its power lay not in its inherent accuracy, but in its ability to conform. The shipwright would press this batten against the gap on the ship’s frame where the new plank was needed. He would carefully bend it to follow the exact contour of the already-set timbers, marking where the edges fell. Then, using a set of dividers, he would “spile off” the pattern—pricking a series of tiny holes through the batten onto the new plank blank below, transferring the complex, living shape of the hull directly onto the raw material.
This process strikes me as a profound metaphor for a certain kind of productivity, one that stands in stark contrast to our modern obsession with rigid, top-down planning. We often approach a big project by trying to blueprint every detail in advance, like an architect drafting plans for a rectilinear building. We want the planks of our work to be straight and predictable. But the most valuable work—the work that fits a unique and evolving situation—is rarely straight. It has contours, curves, and unexpected bends. The shape of the problem reveals itself only as we build.
The spiling batten teaches us the discipline of responsive measurement. Instead of forcing the material to conform to an abstract ideal, it invites the work itself to dictate the next step. It is a tool for listening. In our own projects, this might translate to a simple practice: before creating a detailed, multi-step plan, spend time simply mapping the current contours of the challenge. Use a “spiling batten”—a notebook, a whiteboard sketch, a conversational walkthrough with a colleague—to trace the actual, imperfect shape of the problem as it exists now. Let the reality of the work impress its form upon your plan, rather than the other way around.
This approach accepts the wobble and the curve as essential qualities, not as errors to be eliminated. The shipwright didn’t curse the hull for not being a straight line; he used his batten to honor its necessary form. Our best work often follows a similar path. It’s not about executing a flawless pre-ordained script, but about developing the sensitivity to take an impression of the situation at hand and cut our efforts to fit it perfectly. The goal isn’t to avoid the unplanned plank, but to become adept at spiling it.
